Tele- or not tele: Enna Tele-Ennalyt 90mm f/2.8

    Lens Version

The lens can be divided into two different major versions:

Version 1: Wide white bands and narrowly banded black bands on the aperture and focus ring. Serial Number <4,000,000.

Version 2: Narrow black and white bands on the aperture and focus ring. It is also available in Enna "Sockel" mount. Serial Number >=4,000,000.

    Tele or not tele?

For photography lenses, a telephoto lens has a focal length larger than the Total Track Length (TTL), where TTL is the distance from the surface of the sensor to the top of the lens. Enna adds “tele” before the name Ennalyt to indicate a telephoto lens. For example, Enna Tele-Ennalyt 90mm f/2.8(Ernostar design) is a telephoto lens while the Ennalyt 95mm f/2.8 & 100mm f/2.8(Triplet design) is a long-focus lens.

    Lens Sharpness

At F2.8, this lens shows decent to good resolution at center with relatively low contrast. The sharpness improves at F4. The resolution at edges becomes OK at F5.6.

The performance of this lens on A7RII is different on A7: the center is still decently sharp at f/2.8 while the edges are still a bit fuzzy at f/5.6. The bokeh is more or less the same.

    Vignetting

On a 36×24mm format sensor, there is only very minor vignetting in the corners which is unlikely to be observed during normal use.

    Flare Resistance

The flare resistance is OK to for a vintage single coated lens. A hood is recommended when there is a strong light source.

    Chromatic Aberration

Longitudinal CA / “Bokeh Fringing” is minor.

    Bokeh

Typical Ernostar type Bokeh, bokeh is very smooth. Spherical aberration is well corrected, which indicates the front and rear bokeh is very similar.

    Price & Value

This lens is pretty rare. I would expect it will cost around $100 to $150 USD for a good copy on eBay as of 2024. Prices may vary significantly.

    Summary

This is a lens I would recommend over the Enna 85mm f/1.5 if one prefers a lightweight portrait lens due to its natural bokeh and medium contrast. The alternative from West Germany will be the Schacht Travenar 90mm f/2.8 which is also an excellent general-purpose lens.
